Biography
Art has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mother was a talented watercolorist and I have fond memories of going to art classes with her as a child, or hanging out in her studio space on our covered patio. During my school years, I would occasionally dabble in sketching and other mediums, and in college, I studied photography. However, after starting my career in the corporate world, art became just a hobby. In the 90s, my sister introduced me to scrapbooking, which led me into the world of mixed media art. Since then, I have been expressing my creativity through art journaling, assemblage, and collage, following the works of several mixed media artists.
In my 40s, I discovered my passion for painting after a series of life events. Art became my therapy and escape as I navigated the twists and turns of life. I devoured online classes and attended art retreats to learn how to paint abstractly and intuitively. In the past 12 years, I have entered a few local art shows and festivals, as well as ran a "paint and sip" business while working as a wedding coordinator for a local country club for 6 years. I recently retired from the wedding industry and feel blessed to be surrounded by a loving husband, my teenager, and extended family, who all enthusiastically support my artistic efforts to be a full-time artist. Over time, my painting style has become more expressive, but still full of whimsy now and then.
I like to work on multiple canvases at the same time, using various mediums and paints to create layers of markings. This process continues until the artwork is either complete or a vision begins to form. I find it interesting to add personal writings, patterned papers, and doodles to the background to add more texture to the piece. It's fascinating when there are hidden gems in the layers which only I know are there. Sometimes, these gems can be discovered by the viewer as they gaze at the artwork.
Inspiration can come from various sources, such as an image, a color palette, a feeling, or an experience. Once inspiration strikes, the canvas becomes more structured, such as flowers in a vase, a little house on a hill, or a colorful animal. Regardless of the inspiration source, the journey of creating the artwork is always exciting!
