John Denver: A Colorado Legacy and a Personal Connection
It’s only fitting that Castle Rock Artists Alliance (CRAA) kicks off its blog series with a tribute
to a legendary Colorado artist—John Denver. His music captures the essence of our state, from
its soaring mountains to its vast open spaces, evoking the sense of wonder and tranquility that
draws so many here.
Denver’s connection to Colorado ran deep. After moving to Aspen in the late 1960s, he was
immediately captivated by its natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle. His love for the state shone
through in his music, with songs like Rocky Mountain High and Sunshine on My Shoulders
becoming anthems for those who cherish the great outdoors. Rocky Mountain High was inspired
by a camping trip with his wife, Annie, during which they witnessed an unforgettable meteor
shower. The song perfectly encapsulates the awe and reverence he felt for the mountains, and in
2007, Colorado honored him by making it one of the state’s official songs.
Beyond music, Denver was a passionate advocate for conservation. He served on the board of
the Wilderness Society and founded the Windstar Foundation to promote environmental
education and sustainable living. He also dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts, performing
benefit concerts and using his voice to support causes like peace and social justice. Throughout
his career, he earned two Grammy Awards, an Emmy, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,
and four No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 33 million records worldwide. 
For me, John Denver’s music holds a special place in my heart. My first vinyl album was Back
Home Again, which I saved up for when I was just eight years old. Growing up as a city kid in
Cleveland, Ohio, I collected pop bottles to return for deposits, mowed lawns, and raked leaves to
earn the money. It took time, but I finally had enough to buy that cherished album, and within
days, I knew every word to every song. His heartfelt lyrics and melodies resonated deeply with
me.
Years later, fate led me to Colorado. During a weekend road trip, I wandered into an antique
store in Elizabeth, where I spotted a copy of Back Home Again. Overcome with nostalgia, I
shared my childhood memories with the shop staff—only to discover they were related to John
Denver! Moved by my story, they gifted me the album. It was a moment that reinforced the
lasting impact of his music and the deep emotional connections he forged with his fans.
John Denver’s music continues to unite people across generations and borders. His songs aren’t
just classics; they remain woven into global culture. Sports stadiums around the world break out
into spontaneous sing-alongs of his beloved hits.
One of the most iconic examples is Take Me Home, Country Roads, which has become an
anthem for West Virginia University. At every home game in Milan Puskar Stadium, thousands
of fans join together in a heartfelt rendition, celebrating Denver’s enduring influence.
The song’s popularity extends far beyond West Virginia. During the 2022 NFL Munich Game, 70,000 fans in Germany sang along in unison, showcasing its universal appeal. Similar moments have played out at European soccer matches, music festivals, and other major events, where audiences embrace its nostalgic and unifying message.
Another long-standing tradition takes place at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles. Since the late 1970s, the team has played Thank God I’m a Country Boy during the seventh inning stretch, with fans enthusiastically clapping and singing along making it one of baseball’s most recognizable stadium anthems.
These moments prove that John Denver’s legacy is alive and well. His music continues to bring people together, celebrating a love for nature, home, and heartfelt storytelling. I encourage everyone to explore his songs and experience the beauty and inspiration he found in our incredible state.
